UPI has become one of the most widely used ways to make digital payments in India. But while ₹1 lakh is commonly understood as the standard UPI transaction limit, the actual amount you can transfer depends on the type of payment. In some categories, the limit can go up to ₹5 lakh.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) have different limits for different types of UPI transactions. There are also separate limits for services such as UPI Lite and UPI 123Pay.
Here is a simple guide to the UPI transaction limits that users need to know.
What Is The Standard UPI Transaction Limit?
For regular UPI payments, the commonly applicable transaction limit is ₹1 lakh.
This means that for ordinary payments, users generally cannot transfer more than ₹1 lakh in a single transaction.
However, ₹1 lakh is not a universal ceiling for every UPI payment. Higher limits have been permitted for specific categories of transactions.
The applicable limit can therefore depend on what you are paying for.
When Can You Transfer Up To ₹5 Lakh Through UPI?
Certain high-value payments can be made through UPI with a limit of up to ₹5 lakh per transaction.
These include eligible tax payments, IPO applications, payments to hospitals and educational institutions, as well as transactions under the RBI Retail Direct Scheme.
For example, if an eligible tax payment is ₹3 lakh, it can be made through UPI without being restricted by the standard ₹1 lakh limit.
However, the higher limit applies only to eligible categories and verified merchants or service providers.
What Is The UPI Limit For Insurance And Capital Markets?
Some other categories have different limits.
For certain capital-market transactions and insurance payments, the applicable UPI transaction limit is ₹2 lakh per transaction, according to the latest limits outlined by Mint.
Other categories have also received higher daily limits under NPCI’s revised framework. This means users should check both the per-transaction limit and the applicable daily limit before making a large payment.
What Is The UPI Lite Transaction Limit?
UPI Lite is designed mainly for smaller-value payments and works with a separate limit.
A UPI Lite user can make a transaction of up to ₹1,000. The maximum balance that can be maintained in UPI Lite is ₹5,000.
This makes UPI Lite useful for everyday, low-value payments where users may not want to enter their UPI PIN for every transaction.
What Is The UPI 123Pay Limit?
UPI 123Pay was introduced to enable UPI payments through feature phones.
The service has a separate transaction ceiling of ₹10,000 per transaction.
Therefore, the limits applicable to regular UPI payments should not be confused with the limits for UPI Lite or UPI 123Pay.
Can Your Bank Set A Lower UPI Limit?
Yes. This is an important point for UPI users.
Even if NPCI allows a transaction up to a particular amount, your bank may impose a lower internal transaction limit.
So, if a payment is within the regulatory limit but still fails, users should check the limits set by their bank or the UPI app being used.
UPI Transaction Limits: What You Should Remember
The key takeaway is that there is no single UPI limit that applies to every payment.
For regular transactions, the commonly applicable limit is ₹1 lakh. Eligible payments such as taxes, IPOs, hospital and educational services can go up to ₹5 lakh per transaction, while UPI Lite and UPI 123Pay have their own lower ceilings.
Before making a large UPI payment, users should therefore check three things: the category of payment, the applicable NPCI limit and their bank’s own transaction limit.
