Finnish deeptech startup S-Transistors has raised €2.6 million in pre-seed funding to develop a new generation of superconducting transistor-based technology aimed at solving one of the biggest scaling challenges in quantum computing. The company, a spin-off from VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, plans to use the funding to work towards what it calls a new “quantum motherboard”.
The funding round was led by Nordic venture capital firm Lifeline Ventures and included an angel investor.
S-Transistors says its technology could help make large-scale quantum computers more energy-efficient, compact and easier to control.
What Is S-Transistors Building?
The startup is developing superconducting transistors, a type of electronic device designed to operate at the extremely low temperatures required by certain quantum computers.
Its long-term goal is to develop quantum motherboards that can manage and connect different parts of a cryogenic quantum computer.
The company says existing superconducting quantum computers face a major scaling challenge because their quantum processors require numerous cables connecting the extremely cold quantum chip to electronics operating at room temperature.
As the number of qubits increases, this approach can become increasingly difficult to manage.
Why Are Superconducting Transistors Important?
Quantum computers based on superconducting technology operate at temperatures close to absolute zero.
This creates a challenge for conventional electronics. Electronics placed close to the quantum processor must consume very little power because excess heat can disturb the extremely cold environment required for quantum operations.
S-Transistors says its superconducting transistors can combine high-speed performance with very low power dissipation.
The company believes this could allow more control electronics to be moved closer to the quantum processor, reducing the need for large numbers of cables running between the cryogenic environment and room-temperature equipment.
How Will The €2.6 Million Be Used?
S-Transistors plans to use the new funding across several areas.
The startup will develop prototypes for cryogenic signal control and handling, establish its own cryogenic laboratory and create a manufacturing pilot line for integrated circuits based on superconducting transistors.
It also plans to expand its team.
The funding is intended to help the company move its technology beyond research and towards products that can eventually be tested and adopted by quantum-computing companies and other customers.
What Is S-Transistors’ First Product?
The startup’s first product is a superconducting-transistor-based multiplexer.
A multiplexer can help route multiple signals through fewer connections. In a quantum-computing environment, this could help address the wiring challenge associated with controlling large numbers of qubits.
S-Transistors says the product is designed to work with existing cryogenic setups and will be shipped to early customers and strategic partners during its first year of operations.
What Is A Quantum Motherboard?
The term “quantum motherboard” describes S-Transistors’ broader vision rather than a conventional computer motherboard.
The company wants to create an integrated platform that can sit inside the cryogenic environment and help control a quantum processor at scale.
Instead of relying on large numbers of individual connections between the quantum chip and external electronics, such a system could bring more of the control infrastructure closer to the processor.
If successful, this could address one of the key hardware challenges involved in scaling superconducting quantum computers.
What Happens Next?
S-Transistors now needs to turn its technology into working products and demonstrate that the approach can operate reliably at the extremely low temperatures required for quantum computing.
The company also sees potential applications beyond quantum computers, including classical computing, artificial intelligence hardware, high-performance computing, spacecraft electronics and particle detectors.
For now, the €2.6 million funding gives S-Transistors the capital to move from laboratory technology towards commercial development.
Its bigger ambition is to help provide the hardware infrastructure needed for the next generation of scalable quantum computers.
