Tim Cook’s Apple Legacy
As Tim Cook prepares to step down as Apple CEO after nearly 15 years at the helm, his legacy is closely linked to the expansion of Apple’s product ecosystem. Cook succeeded Steve Jobs in 2011 and oversaw a period in which Apple entered new categories, strengthened its services business and became one of the world’s most valuable technology companies.
Apple Watch: Apple’s Biggest New Product Category
The Apple Watch was launched in 2015 and became the first major new product category introduced under Tim Cook’s leadership. Initially positioned as a smartwatch and an iPhone companion, the device gradually developed into a major health and fitness product.
Over the years, Apple added features such as ECG, blood oxygen monitoring, fall detection and crash detection. These features helped transform the Apple Watch from a traditional wearable into a device focused on health and personal safety.
AirPods: Apple Changes Wireless Audio
Apple entered the true wireless earbuds market with the first-generation AirPods in 2016. Powered by the company’s W1 chip, AirPods offered quick pairing, seamless connectivity and improved battery management.
Despite early criticism of their design, AirPods became one of Apple’s most successful accessories. Later models added features such as active noise cancellation and spatial audio, helping Apple strengthen its wireless audio ecosystem.
Apple’s Shift Away From Intel
One of Tim Cook’s biggest technology decisions came in 2020, when Apple began moving its Mac computers away from Intel processors to its own Apple Silicon chips.
The first M-series chips combined high performance with power efficiency and helped reinvigorate Apple’s Mac lineup. Apple Silicon later expanded to products including the iPad Pro and iPad Air, while giving Apple greater control over the hardware and software used across its devices. (NDTV Profit)
Apple Vision Pro: Entering Spatial Computing
In 2023, Apple entered the mixed-reality market with the launch of Apple Vision Pro. The company described the headset as its first “spatial computer”, marking Apple’s entry into a completely new computing category.
Vision Pro combines augmented and virtual reality with eye tracking, hand gestures and voice commands. A Digital Crown allows users to control the balance between virtual content and the physical world.
However, Vision Pro has not matched the commercial success of products such as the iPhone or Apple Watch. Even so, it remains one of the most ambitious product launches of the Tim Cook era. (NDTV Profit)
AirTag: A Small Product With A Big Ecosystem
Apple launched AirTag in 2021 as a compact Bluetooth tracker designed to help users find everyday belongings such as keys, bags and luggage.
Its biggest strength was its integration with Apple’s Find My network. The device showed how Apple could combine a relatively simple product with its wider ecosystem of devices and services to make it more useful to consumers.
Apple has continued to refine AirTag, while Find My-related technology has also increasingly been used to help locate lost luggage at airports and by airlines. (NDTV Profit)
Tim Cook Expanded Apple’s Ecosystem
Tim Cook’s impact on Apple extends beyond these five products. During his tenure, Apple expanded services such as Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Pay and iCloud, turning services into a major source of recurring revenue.
At the same time, Apple continued to launch new generations of the iPhone, iPad and Mac while expanding products such as the Apple Watch and AirPods
